IRS Website Hacked

According to Associated Press cyber criminals hacked into IRS website based on online service and gained access to tax information of more tan 100 000 taxpayers. Hackers used Get Transcript system, which allows taxpayers to get tax returns and other information from past years. Criminals were able to bypass irs website security screen that requires data about taxpayer, social security number, dob, tax filing status and street address.

IRS website technicians noticed an increase in the number of taxpayers seeking transcripts. Currently it is unclear who hacked into irs website, or were did the criminals come from. However IRS has started an investigation.

According to IRS representative Koskinen:

“Eighty percent of the of the identity theft we’re dealing with and refund fraud is related to organized crime here and around the world. These are extremely sophisticated criminals with access to a tremendous amount of data.”

IRS website hack proves once again how important cyber security can be for any country around the world. Hundreds of thousands of American people and companies data are endangered because irs was unable to implement better cyber security measures. Based on current trends and our experience we can definitely state that stolen information will be sold on black markets in the deep web which will make this information accessible to everyone.
